A Moment of Silence

A moment of silence for our recently departed piano. I was just sitting at home not expecting the movers for another 4 hours. Imagine my surprise when they knocked on the door 3 hours early! If only I'd played the piano more, if only I'd practiced more...I guess it's too late for piano deathbed regrets. Our house won't be music-less for long. I'm borrowing my mom's synthesizer. From Beethoven and Mozart to Michael Iceberg...

The Police Beat

Well, I have to give a nod to my friend Tiona. For I don't know how long, she collected the Police Beat section from the school newspaper. She only kept the really good ones and I happened to be up on campus the other day for Colby's presentation. While in this particular Police Beat there were actually a couple of genuinely disconcerting items (one girls had had her car tires deflated and the valve wires cut), the following are again some of the great things that qualify as breaking news. Disorderly Conduct
April 11: BYU police received a call that four male students were using the Helaman Halls pool even though it was not open yet. When the police officer arrived he was able to locate the students because they were the only students walking home wet.

April 15: A resident of May Hall was caught lighting toilet paper on fire in the men's restroom. Police are questioning him. (About what? Can you imagine the line of questioning: Why were you lighting toilet paper on fire? What's the kid going to say?)

Theft
April 9: A female student called her own cell phone after she discovered that it was missing. A person she did not know picked up the phone and refused to return it to her. The thief is now sending her friends text messages and sending them on erroneous "missions" to recover the phone. Her phone has not yet been recovered.

April 10: A BYU bookstore employee was suspicious of a male shopper who tried to return two French books without an ID or a receipt. After being questioned, BYU police determined that the student's brother-in-law had bought the books for the student to take on his mission. The student did not want them and was trying to return them.

April 11: Someone stole 1,000 square feet of sod from west of Helaman Halls. Police have no suspects. (What are they going to do with all that sod? Mow it?)

April 8: The father of a student called BYU police when he had not heard from his daughter for four days. BYU police called the student and told her to call her father. -Compiled by Jesse Gunther (good work)

Just a quick shout out to the Lapes! How're ya doin' neighbors!?

We finally found the Lape's blog! I'll admit, we love our new neighbors (even though we really haven't seen much of them-newlyweds), but how can you have better neighbors than the Lapes? I mean, really c'mon. They always had sugar when we needed it and lots of good times! They've been blogging since March so I've got a lot of reading to do. Their blog is now on the list!

Single Conversation

Colby and I were at the SLC center (in Salt Lake, of course)when we stepped out of the elevator to see three girls in conversation:

Girl 1: So, what about your boyfriend.
Girl 2: Well, he had a communication problem and with commitments. He had a problem making plans and following through with them.
Girl 3: Yeah, that is a problem.

Just an adult conversation about adult relationship problems. Refreshing. Much better than some other relationship problems that you hear about.

Coupon Clipping

Colby and I just came back from Costco and we actually used coupons. I know it seems dumb, but this was the first time we've ever taken a booklet and used it...and I had a TON of fun! I just love seeing the numbers go down when I'm paying for something. Granted everything was size huge but like the adage goes, a penny saved is...not much. Wait, a penny saved is a penny earned! Yeah. That's it. Silly me.

The Ninth Month

Education runs pretty strong on both sides of the family. When you see the heritage is it any surprise that Colby married a school teacher, or that I and the next sister decided to enter education? Colby's mom has been teaching for ages and is really good at it. She handles elementary school and Colby's aunt teaches in Nebo district. My mom tutors, my Nana and Grandad tutor (and actually run a successful reading help program for all of Canada-Bragging? Sure, but I'm a little biased), Nana also taught school and subbed for years and her dad, my great-grandpa also taught for years. He was actually quite the poet too. He passed on that appreciation to Nana. When mom was expecting me, Nana found the following poem and gave it to Mom. Now that I'm approaching the ninth month, Nana has passed it on to me. I thought I'd share it with you because it really describes the situation.

The Ninth Month

When it rains it pours...

Well. I have good news and bad news. First of all, thank you for all of you in helping support our baby. It was great fun to see everyone and thank you very much. It really does take a whole village to raise a child (in many different ways). So again, thank you for your support.

In other good news...My youngest sister Danielle just told us all about her acceptance to BYU. So this next year, my parents will be empty-nesters and all 4 of their daughters will be in Utah! We haven't all lived in the same city for at least 7 years or so because that's when I started college.

Big changes also are afoot. The most obvious is the addition to the family. The other is that we're moving from Provo closer to work. We're both very excited. The other is an opportunity that I may be able to teach at a High School next year. That would be a great opportunity as well.

Colby is also graduating! Yeah! Another milestone! He's also been doing great in his classes this semester. Like I said, when it rains...
