Baby Ruth?

So Jack had his 2 month check up and I asked about his head shape. He always looks left when sleeping and right when on his stomach so the same side of his head always had pressure on it. I asked the doc about it and she said it wasn't bad (it isn't) but then she said, you'll want to fix this now. I'm thinking sure if my kid doesn't have to wear a helmet that's ok, but then she added, "Yeah if you don't fix it his ears could be lopsided and it could even affect his eyes." Yikes! I immediately thought of the Goonies and Sloth. Baby? Ruth! Ruth! So we just roll a washcloth and place it on the left side so he can't look that way and let me tell you, he's tried to shove it out of the way and has even wiggled until he's far enough away from the rolled up cloth to look the way he wants. I guess he's not an ambi-turner. Gotta' love that kid!

New Callings

Well, Colby just got called as the Weeblos leader and I got called as the New Ward Choir Director. Someone leaned over and said I hope you know the Choir Director calling involves bringing treats! I'm certainly not above bribing.

New fettish

If you haven't checked out etsy.com I highly recommend it. It's like a giant craft fair/bazaar featuring the unique, unusual and sometimes bizarre (hehe, little play on words). Anyway, we watched The Golden Compass last night and really liked it. Then we just decided to surf the web and found out about the style called "steampunk". Hence the now steampunk theme. Sorry Melissa-the cowboy was shortlived. Anyway... It's a Victorian style (when everything was steam powered) but with a sci-fi element, like Golden Compass. So cool. Of course etsy has TONS of different things. It's just fun to see what people can make. My pampered baby purchase that I wish I had the money to spare--Monkey hats. Seriously, check out etsy. Just type in any old thing in the search. They even let you browse by color.

just stuff

Well, just a couple of things to write about and it's gonna be quick! First: I'm not exactly sure what inspired the cowboy kick, but it works (for now). Second: This is Jackson's first foray into the swimming pool and no, that isn't me. It's our landlady. I just didn't want to get wet and Colby wanted to get really wet so Shannon offered to take Jackson. I was a little nervous until she yelled at her own kids to stop splashing because they were getting the baby wet. Thank you, Shannon. The hoodie poster is the bathtub clean-up afterwards. He loved the pool by the way and was kicking and cooing all the way. Third: as really, really hard as the transition has been, I'm glad to be a "stay at home mom" (which is anybody says isn't hard work, they've obviously never had kids). It's great seeing him learn new things even if they are small. For example he added "hi" to his growing repertoire of "gah", "aiiieeee", and "phbbt." Shannon mentioned that he learned how to say "hi" while she was watching him and I could take pleasure in knowing that he actually said it to me first. Possessive? Maybe. But that's what firsts and moms are for!

For all the men

Well, as many of you know, Colby is studying for the DAT (Dental Admissions Test). When we came across the following question Colby answered it as best he could. Let me know what you think?

"What are the four phases of the menstrual cycle?"


His answer:"Ummm. ..let's see. The pissed off phase, the moody phase, the I-hate-the-world-phase and the crying phase. Did I get it right?"

My opinion: Passed with flying colors. Yours?

The most inarticulate generation to come along in like, you know, a long time

I really don't like poetry. I hate most of it and will only read it if forced. But, I came across this Slam Poet called Taylor Mali. I like his stuff. It's performance poetry (if any of you have seen "She's All That"-it's similar). If I'd known about this stuff, I'd probably have enjoyed it much more! I really like his metaphors in "Labeling keys". The "metal orphans" is brilliant. The first video explains a little about what slam poetry is (or isn't as you'll come to see).

Joe Canadian

When I was 16 I moved to Canada. My mom is Canadian and she said there wasn't a whole lot of pro-Canada feeling or propaganda when she grew up. I moved in and this commercial was aired and suddenly it was Canada all the way. I love Canada. We've even tossed around the idea of moving up there (if Hilary won). It's a great place and this commercial covers almost all the misconceptions that people have about it. I mean really, if you say you're from Canada people ask you these questions. Kind of ironic that a beer commercial could spark so much patriotism. It's a pretty cool commercial.

So our RS is hosting a slew of food storage classes. This last Sunday the Bishop spent 1 1/2 hrs scaring everyone and so I thought I should step it up a bit for food storage. Megan came with us and we learned about applebox ovens, solar ovens, and using alcohol for fuel. Who knew? Although I think the rest of the world would take note if the Mormons started buying alcohol in bulk. Interesting. They also let us sample different kinds of milk alternatives including powdered milk. And I must say that I'd have to be pretty desperate to drink rice milk. Nasty!! Soy wasn't so bad (but I already like soy), oat milk tasted "oaty" and the almond milk was really "almondy". Nice descriptions, huh? Then onto the powdered milks. By far the milkiest was a brand called "Country Cream". It was unanimous. Although a bit more expensive (by a few dollars) Country Cream was like 2%. The church's "Provident Pantry" was only palatable with added vanilla. If no vanilla you definitely had to choke it down. Megan and Colby did shots. Also, a very knowledgeable food storage guru said that if you're squeamish about powdered milk, chances are if you've had store bought milk you've had powdered milk. Apparently, a lot of grocery stores keep a supply of powdered milk on hand if they run out of their stock. They just reconstitute it (not rehydrate) and sell it to you and no one is the wiser. Corporate fiends. Moving on, one of the women demonstrated cooking with the applebox ovens by making macademia and chocolate chip cookies. By the end of milk tasting we weren't sure if the milk was to wash the cookies down or if the cookies were to wash the milk down. I discreetly ended my tasting session with my cookie.

A Blogging Revolution!! (Plus something for teachers)

The transfer to homebody has been an interesting one and I find myself looking at and blogging a lot more than I otherwise would which is why I'm so excited to find other people's blogs! One blog at a time we are slowly taking over the world pushing journalism and interconnectivity to new levels! Bwah-hah-hah-hah. Okay, a little over the top, but welcome Howards to the blogiverse. The other thing is a video for all the teachers out there. Onofrios and Seymours this is for you or really anyone that has taught before--Relief Society, Sunday School...You name it, you've felt like this.
